WHY …

...uses its extensive contacts to create networking opportunities for grassroots organizations. For thousands of organizations WHY has helped raise more than $6 million, initiated countless media connections and facilitated meetings with policymakers.

...runs the only centralized, nationwide database of innovative organizations working on food, nutrition and agriculture issues across the country.

...works at the U.N. (where we hold official NGO status) to increase food security at the national and international levels. We publish information and influence policy on sustainable agriculture, microcredit and community-building.

...helps students understand the root causes of hunger and poverty, and to empower them to make a difference. WHY offers teacher consultation, a curriculum guide, an award-winning web site and a quarterly newsletter.

...forges relationships between artists and grassroots organizations to raise funds and public awareness. We make it easy for artists to support social causes by matching them with our network organizations. In 1999 WHY raised more than $1.5 million in concert-related donations for 225 organizations.

Take action:

  • Utilize WHY’s guidelines to find programs that are making an impact in your community.
  • Shop with your conscience while supporting community-based organizations that are empowering people and fighting poverty. There are numerous non-profit organizations that operate small businesses and enterprises that create jobs, develop community wealth and offer unique job training opportunities.
  • Educate and involve children in searching for solutions to hunger and poverty. WHY’s KIDS Can Make a Difference is an educational program that helps middle school and high school students understand the root causes of hunger and poverty, and how they – as individuals – can take action.
