Farmers Speak Out: The Global Struggle for Food Sovereignty
Monday, September 10th, 5PM
The New School, NYC
A free evening discussion and reception

What do farmers and food activists in the US have in common with farmers around the world? How can we develop a system of fair trade that respects each nation’s right to provide food for its people? What lessons can be learned about organizing for justice across borders?

WHY (World Hunger Year) and The New School invite you to a free evening discussion on global food justice featuring prominent farm leaders from Latin America, the US, and Canada. The farm leaders will discuss the movement for food sovereignty, their struggles for land reform and fair trade, and how to build solidarity and action across borders. Confirmed speakers include:

Braulio Álvarez, Venezuelan National Assemblyman and National Coordinator of CANEZ, Venezuela’s largest peasant group

(Invited) Milton Fornaziere, A leader of the Landless Workers Movement (MST) in Brazil.

Juan Tiney Ixbalán, General Coordinator of CONIC, Guatemala’s National Peasant and Indigenous Coordinating Organization

Maria Del Pilar Jurado, representative of ANUC-UR, Columbia's National Association of Campesino Farmers.

Diógenes Lucio, representative of FENOCIN, the National Federation of Peasant, Indigenous, and Black Organizations of Ecuador

George Naylor, President of the National Family Farm Coalition, which represents family farms and rural groups in the U.S.
