The Awards were presented at a ceremony in New York City in June 1996.

  • First Prize: "Easy Prey," Jim Morris, Houston Chronicle.
  • Second Prize: Continuing reporting on hunger and poverty by Coleman McCarthy, Washington Post.

PERIODICALS
  • First Prize: "Working Harder, Getting Nowhere," Cathy Booth, Alan Blackman, Ann Simmons, Dan Cray and Elizabeth Taylor.
  • Second Prize: "Along U.S. Border, Pollution, Poverty, Ignorance and Greed Threaten Nation's Health," by Andrew Slotnik, Journal of the American Medical Association.
