Criteria
Criteria for the Harry Chapin Media Awards Include:
- The impact of the work on its audience and on its awareness of the problem
- The quality of the writing, visuals, and presentation
- Whether the work promotes the empowerment of people
- Whether the work is a new idea or an important restatement of the old
- Whether the work reaches a broad audience and/or reaches its targeted audience
- Whether the work is solution oriented and informative
The panel of judges for the Harry Chapin Media Awards consist of journalists, researchers, and experts in the fields of hunger and poverty. They will determine the distribution of prizes and their decisions will be final.
Entries
- All entries for the 2007 Harry Chapin Media Awards must have appeared in the media between January 1 and December 31, 2007. International entries must be submitted in English. Unpublished manuscripts or photographs are not eligible. Television, film, and radio must have been broadcast or narrow-cast. Please specify the date that the entry was published or broadcast on the enclosed application form.
- All submissions must include the enclosed application form plus two copies of the work, which should be in the following format:
- Books: Two copies of the published book.
- Newspapers and Periodicals: One original copy of the article plus one standard letter-size paper.
- TV/Film: Two VHS tapes. If possible please include a copy of the final script of the broadcast.
- Radio: Two audio cassettes or CDs. If possible please include a copy of the final script of the broadcast.
- Photojournalism: Two copies of the tear sheets from the original publication or a CD-ROM of the images. Images can also be submitted by email at media@worldhungeryear.org. Please send them in JPG format. Finalists in this category will be asked to send original prints of their work for judging purposes.
- All entries must also include appropriate application fees:
One Entry-- $25.00 Two Entries-- $40.00 Three to Five Entries-- $50.00
Checks or money orders should be made payable to World Hunger Year. If individual negotiation of entry fee is required, please contact WHY.
- World Hunger Year will return submissions only if requested and if they are accompanied by sufficient return postage. WHY assumes no responsibility for the return of submissions.
- The cash awards will be presented to the credited writer, reporter, or photographer, or in the broadcast category, to both the producer and reporter. WHY must be notified in cases where the award is to be distributed differently. In all cases, the organ of the media which published, showed or broadcast the winner shares the acknowledgement. By entering the wards, contestants consent that in the event their entry is a finalist or winner, the work can be published, with full attribution, on the WHY web site.
Nominations
Anyone may nominate a work which they consider worthy of a media award. Just fill out the enclosed application sheet and WHY will solicit the appropriate publisher or broadcaster to enter the work. No entry fee is required.
Deadline
All submissions to the 2007 Harry Chapin Media Awards must be postmarked no later than February 1nd, 2008.
