Proposal Takes TANF 1 Step Forward, 2 Steps Back
Sen. Grassley "marks up" TANF reauthrorization legislation

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has reviewed Sen. Charles Grassley's (R-IA), chair of the Senate Finance Committee, document describing his proposal for TANF reauthorization legislation. The Center calls Grassley's mark "a modest improvement on the controversial TANF reauthorization legislation."


The Senate Finance Committee is scheduled to consider amendments to the proposal and decide whether to send it to the full Senate for consideration — on September 10, 2003. Taken as a whole, said the Center, the Grassley proposal raises a number of issues and concerns, and would need to be changed in several significant ways to be workable for families and states.
